A Reimbursement Program for Renters
This program provides a reimbursement for eligible Connecticut renters who are older or living with a disability and whose income does not exceed certain limits. Persons renting an apartment or room, or living in cooperative housing or a mobile home may be eligible for this program.
To be eligible, recipients must meet the following qualifications:
- Must be a Connecticut resident for at least one year; and
- Be age 65 or older; or
- Be age 50 or older and the surviving spouse of a renter who at the time of the renter’s death had qualified and was entitled to tax relief; or
- Be age 18 or older and eligible to receive Social Security Disability benefits
The Renters’ Rebate program provides a cash reimbursement to qualified applicants for the rent they have paid.
The rebate amount is based on a graduated income scale and the amount the renter pays in rent and utilities. Generally, the rebate amounts range between $50 – $900.
This state program is administered by each municipality. Typically, application may be made at the municipal social service agency, senior center or the assessor’s office, depending on the town. The application period is between April 1st and October 1st.
